Instructor (Adjunct Faculty)

Context

Adjunct faculty will be assigned to instruct a course in the Master of Science in Education (MSEd): Educational Studies degree program. The main responsibilities of adjunct faculty include developing and fostering a course culture that is supportive and responsive. The MSEd degree is based around in-depth learning that integrates university course material with a candidate’s teaching context. Integrative learning is dependent on a high level of coaching and collaboration between the instructor and the candidate. This is achieved through active and continual communication with candidates. Instructors will also provide meaningful and constructive feedback on course assessments. The program is fully online and all staff roles require a significant degree of technological dexterity. With very few exceptions all interactions take place over email, other web tools, or phone.

Overview of Responsibilities

Planning and Execution

  • Receive and apply feedback.

  • Engage in ongoing collaboration with the JHU MSEd Program Team and candidates' Advisors.

Communicate

  • Email/call/text candidates to maintain contact regarding course content, course progress, candidate development, and any other concerns.

  • Respond to candidate concerns within one day of receipt.

  • Have two voice-to-voice connections with each candidate during the semester. These voice-to-voice connections are built into each course.

  • Communicate regularly with the program team regarding any course issues and the progress and development of individual candidates.

  • Engage with colleagues in norming, training, and other collaborative sessions.

  • Complete pre-work required for norming and training sessions.  

  • Provide candidates with the opportunity to give feedback on the effectiveness of your instruction.

  • Follow up, as necessary, to address candidate concerns and document support for each candidate.

Management

  • Remain accountable to feedback from candidates and program team regarding course management (including but not limited to: timely grading of assignments, posting of course announcements, completion of action items as assigned by the program team, responsiveness and participation in ongoing training and development).

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field

  • Minimum 5 years in classroom teaching experience (with evidence of proven student achievement gains)

  • Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of teacher education and improving the practice of teachers

  • Strong organizational, written, oral, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Candidate-learning orientation

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and demands

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity

  • Exceptional self-motivation to work in an online setting, including a high degree of confidence with technology

  • Growth mindset with a flexible attitude

Time Commitment and Compensation

Adjunct faculty compensation is dependent upon the number of credit hours taught during the semester. Due to the nature of online instruction, the position requires flexible hours with some weekend and evening work.

 

The current compensation rate per credit hour is:

  • $4,500 for 3 credits

  • $3,000 for 2 credits

  • $1,500 for 1 credit

Contract Period

Instructors are hired on a semester by semester basis.
