You may be a good fit for this role if you:

Context

Advisors support current candidates in the collaborative partnership between Teach For America, TNTP and The Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Each advisor will be assigned between 75-100 candidates who they will work with over the course of the candidates’ progress through the program.  

 

Advisors must make a two-year commitment to ensure they are able to work with their advisees throughout the entirety of the candidates’  program experience.  Contracts are issued one year at a time and renewals are based on performance.

Overview of Responsibilities
  • Provide academic and career advising for current candidates: assess need for services from, and refer candidates to, other support resources on campus.

  • Contribute to advisor community by sharing best practices and collaborating with other advisors as needed.

  • Collaborate with a TFA regional office to support candidate completion of certification requirements (depending on cohort assignment)

  • Track candidate progress toward graduation through registration checks and grade checks

  • Participate in candidate recruitment and retention activities, where applicable.

  • Demonstrate respect for all individuals and welcome diversity among candidates and colleagues.

  • Work in a fast-paced, online setting to deliver academic and support service advising on a year-round basis.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field

  • Minimum 6 months experience supporting students from a variety of backgrounds, and with diverse academic interests and abilities

  • Minimum 6 months experience in coordinating and managing young adults

  • Minimum 6 months of professional experience in teacher preparation and development work

  • Strong organizational, written, oral, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong customer-service orientation

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Time Commitment and Compensation
  • 5-7 hours per week; occasionally up to 10 hours per week.

  • $27 per hour

Contract Period
  • Yearly 

  • Advisors make verbal commitments for two years but sign contracts on a yearly basis.

  • The hiring season occurs in the winter and the position starts in May.
